KB addresses a mammoth gathering at
Wobulenzi, Luwero District
( Friday 20 Jan 2006).
KB left Kampala headed for
Luweero and Lango but his movement was slowed down considerably by
thousands of people who filled the streets in Bwaise and Kawempe towns in
the outskirts of Kampala city to see him. He waved to his supporters
and continued to address his first rally of approximately ten thousand
people in Wobulenzi Town Center at 3:00 p.m., and an even larger rally was
waiting in Kasana, Luweero at 4:00 p.m. Upon arrival in Kasana, KB
was adorned with a ribbon reading, “Luweero welcomes Dr. Besigye”
Addressing
the people in Luganda, KB reminded them of the times NRM was struggling in
the bush for democracy and freedom. He remembered with nostalgia and
emotion how civilians had identified guerilla fighters by symbols of
strings of a certain color that were tied to their wrists or legs; and how
the wananchi had protected them under very dangerous conditions. He
regretted that the struggle had now come to naught because what they
fought for was squandered by a greedy and authoritarian regime. He blamed
President Museveni for diverting from the goals of the struggle. Kizza
Besigye said the country was once again faced with widespread poverty,
corruption, insecurity, and bad governance, the very things they had vowed
to end while in the bush. He pledged that FDC would work hard to develop
the area and bring back prosperity to its people.

The campaign team then headed
to Lira stopping at Migyera, Kigumba and Karuma where KB waved to people
gathered there but did not address them due to limited time. The
entourage arrived in Lira after sundown, it was too late to hold a rally
and they drove straight to a radio talk show on Radio North where people
who had waited for KB the whole day mobbed the station. And on cue,
electricity was cut off in Lira town in conformity with a pattern that
seems to follow the candidate around the country.
On the Talk Show, Kizza
Besigye sent condolences to the people of Lango for the loss of Dr. Apollo
Milton Obote. He addressed the deterioration of security in the region
and made a firm pledge to restore security and prioritize accelerated
development for Northern Uganda. He also assured the people of Lango that
FDC would tackle poverty by among other thing reallocating resources lost
through rampant corruption to development. Dr. Besigye thanked the people
of Lira for according him a very warm welcome when he returned to Uganda
after 4 years of exile.
Kizza Besigye is accompanied
on the tour of the North by Vice President of FDC, Hon. Prof. Ogenga
Latigo, and FDC Executive members, Hon. Odonga Otto, Hon. Reagan Okumu and
the head of the youth league Mr. Samuel Makokha.
Tomorrow, Saturday 21st
January 2006, Kizza Besigye’s entourage heads to Pader District.
